Dog Breed Series: Miniature Schnauzer

Posted March 31st, 2010 by admin

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small, sturdily built dog. This dog breed is considered an intelligent, loving and cheerful dog. Miniature Schnauzers are energetic, playful and can get along well with children because they like to be with people most of the time. If trained well or handled with proper leadership from the owner, they can also get along with other dogs.

Miniature Schnauzers make really good companion and family pets. However, if you are considering adopting this breed, you must be calm but firm to show this breed that you are the one in authority. This dog breed also makes a good watchdog although they do not have a yappy bark, but rather a low, carried-out howl of voice. If you love travelling, this breed is best for you because they are very easy to travel with. You only have to make sure that you bring their essential needs like water, food, poop bags and stroller/carrier so that you’ll have an easier traveling time.

This breed is also suitable for apartment life although it is highly advisable that you provide him with daily walks to ensure that he is always fit, happy and healthy all the time. In terms of health issues, you have to keep an eye with his kidney and liver because this breed is prone to liver disease, kidney stones as well as diabetes and skin disorders. A regular vet visit together with healthy food and supplement, and exercise can keep your Miniature Schnauzer healthy. Finally, in terms of grooming, the wiry coat is not hard to groom, although it does need attention. Comb and brush daily with a short wire brush to prevent matting. The hair should be clipped all over to an even length twice a year, preferably in spring and fall. Trim around the eyes and ears with blunt-nosed scissors and clean the hair around the mouth after meals.

I’m planning to buy a pet dog but Schnauzer I think is highly priced. I’m getting frustrated about it.
