How important is it to teach your puppy potty training? Not many dog owners may realize this but potty training is very important especially if you do not want your little pooch to create a huge mess and leave an unpleasant smell inside your home. You must understand that taking care of a puppy is very similar to raising a child. It is actually very essential that you teach your puppy good housetraining methods, most especially potty training. Hence, having a careless attitude on your end or lack of proper interaction between you and your pet may lead to permanent problems with your dog’s potty habits later on. So better start early and start it right.

The key to becoming successful in training your puppy to good potty habits is patience. Keep in mind that your puppy is like a little kid so never get restless and mad if he does not understand you for the first few days of training. Just give him ample time to grasp your instructions and understand the importance of going outdoors to potty. It is completely your responsibility to keep an eye on your puppy’s potty habit before he can really master the training. Most puppy owners find it a hassle to effectively potty train their puppies. But, potty training can be very simple if you know how and where to begin. Here are ten effective tips on how you can potty train your puppy quickly:

1.  Give your puppy some time to develop outdoor potty habits because he does not have the endurance level of an adult dog with regards to controlling bladder and bowels for a long time.

2. During the initial training phase, do not scold, punish or reprimand your puppy if he evacuates inside, but make him understand that it is not proper.

3. During potty training, give your puppy dry/ bolus food especially if you’re feeding him packaged food. This way he will have solid stools.

4. Every time you see that your puppy is trying to ease himself inside the house, alert him by saying “No” or clap your hands, and carefully lift him outside and wait for him to finish his potty. Or if you’re having a hard time potty training your pet, sanitary pants is a great alternative or solution.

5. Put your puppy on leash and take him to the same spot every day to make him understand that spot is his proper place for potty.

6. Praise your puppy every time he is able to ease himself outdoors.

7. Be patient when you take him to potty. Give him time to evacuate completely. Sometimes, he may take two to three tries.

8. Don’t confine the puppy in rooms that have carpets or rugs. Keep the floor bare, so that it is easier to clean if the puppy happens to potty indoors.

9. Always make sure you clean the puppy’s potty place afterwards.

10. If your puppy is four months or older and he is still unable to learn potty training outside, seek the help of a veterinarian to figure out the problem.
