How to Housetrain a Pug

Posted July 23rd, 2010 by admin

In general, the first six months of your Pug’s puppy life is best for training. Although, many people view Pugs as one of the more difficult breeds to effectively housetrain, this is actually not true. The truth is it will all depend on how you train your dog.

If you are not careful, you could unintentionally train your Pug to bark, bite, jump on strangers and beg for food. This is because Pug puppies are naturally adorable and you may not see that it is necessary to correct any bad behavioural traits that they may show. Keep in mind that housetraining a Pug takes time and patience. You need to let your Pug know where his personal potty space is so that you won’t have to clean up messes throughout the inside of your home.

Here are some simple tips on how to housetrain your pet Pug:

*Housetraining in the morning:

  • Take your Pug outside and let him have ample time to relieve himself.  (Do not forget to bring a trash bag and dispose his waste properly).
  • When he’s done, acknowledge his act so that he will know that he did something right and that it should be a regular habit.
  • Give him breakfast.
  • Take your Pug back outside for potty again. When he’s done, bring him indoors.
  • It is advisable to take your Pug outdoors every 20 minutes if you are at home.

*Housetraining in the afternoon:

  • Give your pet Pug lunch.  (Give him the exact amount of dog food recommended for his age).
  • Take him outside and bring him back indoors after 20 minutes.
  • If you notice that he keeps walking around and sniffing the floor for a few minutes indoors, it is a sign that you should take him back outside for potty.

*Housetraining in the evening:

  • As soon as you get home from work, take your Pug outside.
  • Bring him indoors to have dinner.
  • Take him back outside for potty.
  • Right before you are ready for bed, take your pet Pug outside again for the last time.
  • Put him in his carrier or let him sleep on a cosy dog bed for the night.

By following these few simple steps, you can properly housetrain your precious Pug.
