If you are planning to raise a rabbit, you will certainly need a rabbit hutch to serve as a home and play area for your bunny. You can either purchase one or build your own to save some money.
The first thing that you must do before building a rabbit hutch is to research or create a design that does not only look good, but also utilises both the quality and quantity of space for your rabbit to play, move around, and rest.
As soon as you find the design that fits the space requirement of your pet, gather all the materials that you will need. Most rabbit hutches have the following materials in common:
- chicken wire
- door hinges
- hook and eye latching device for the door
- plywood
- boards
- staples
You also have to prepare the tools that you will need such as wire cutters, pliers, regular screwdriver, nails, straight edge, measuring tape and a hammer.
After gathering all the tools and materials, the next thing to do is to construct the frame for the rabbit hutch using the boards. The sizes of the plywood, board and chicken wire that you will use would all depend on the size of the rabbit hutch that you will make. For example, a chicken wire that has a length of 24′x96′ and two plywood sheets that have a measurement of 24″x72″x3/4″ can already be used to build a rabbit hutch that can house two to three rabbits.
When building a rabbit hutch, it is a must to construct the frame first before working on the inside of the cage. Having a sketch or an illustration printed in paper can help you work easier and faster. After constructing the frame, it is time to put the legs on all four corners of the frame for support. Then, you can add partitions or accessories inside the rabbit hutch. You may also paint the rabbit hutch or allow the plywood to weather naturally.
