Are you a responsible dog owner? To help you find out if you are doing your job well on raising your dog, here are some ways that can help you keep your pet dog happy, healthy and safe all the time:
1. Do not forget to neuter or spay your dog as soon as it is old enough. By doing this, you help prevent any adolescent behaviour problems in your dog.
2. Always keep your dog leashed in public to prevent your dog from running away, or jumping on other dogs and people.
3. Regularly provide your dog with healthy food and clean water.
4. Clean your dog’s water and food bowls daily. This is important if you want your dog to stay healthy.
5. During long trips with your dog, make regular stops so that he can get out for some exercise and for him to have a drink of water. Do not leave your dog unattended inside the car.
6. Make sure that your backyard is secure when your dog is outside. Check for holes in the fences or gates, especially if you have a small dog. If your dog has puppies, you might want to put wire over gates with gaps in them as very small dogs may be able to fit through the bars. Also, if you have a young dog, make sure he cannot access any electrical wires or cords.
7. Take your dog to the vet at least once a year for regular check-ups. This is to make sure that he is healthy and also to get treatment for any problems.
8. Brush your dog’s hair regularly to keep his fur from getting tangled and dull. This is especially important if your dog has long hair.
9. Train your dog to become well-mannered. Training will strengthen the bond with you and your dog, prevent or correct unwanted behaviours, and create a well-balanced, happy pet. You can check out your local directory for obedience schools in your area that provides obedience training.
10. Provide chew toys to keep his teeth healthy and to relieve boredom as well.
11. Bathe your dog once a month, otherwise their skin will dry out and become itchy.
12. Take your dog for a walk at least twice a day to physically and mentally exercise him. Without proper exercise, your dog will become bored and many behaviour problems will arise like excessive barking, jumping and hyper-activity.
