Do you want to adopt a Maltese? Before you decide to do so, read on for more information about this mild-mannered, affectionate and loving dog breed.

The Maltese breed makes a fine companion dog and a good family pet. This dog breed is well suited to inexperienced dog owners as well as to the more experienced because its intelligence, alertness, and high learning rate helps to make training easier for its owners. The Maltese has plenty of energy and spirit, and loves to play. This breed has an inquisitive and curious nature, and for a small dog, he can be quite confident when well socialized. The Maltese dog tends to also fare well in obedience training, and enjoy a variety of mental stimulation to keep him alert.

The Maltese dog makes an effective watchdog because he will bark to raise an alarm or to announce visitors. The Maltese gets along well with children but does not like to be handled roughly, so older children are best suited to this breed because they can be less harsh and gentler to dogs. This breed is fine with apartment living, but needs regular leashed walks or a safe, securely fenced area for his exercise and play.

When it comes to grooming, you will need to brush his beautiful coat on a daily basis in order to keep it looking good. Clipping may be required every couple of months. You should also check that the eyes are always clean, and trim the hair around the bottom for proper hygiene. To reduce the risk of infection you should ensure that his ears are clean and dry as well. When properly groomed the Maltese is a low shedder, therefore, you wouldn’t have to worry for any spread of allergies or infection in your household.

The life expectancy of the Maltese is around 12 to 15 years. In terms of health problems that a Maltese may encounter, some of these include glaucoma, deafness, thyroid problems, low blood sugar, sensitivity to chemicals and drugs, dental problems, luxating patella, PRA, and entropion. A regular visit to the vet is highly recommended.
